When we travel back to Christchurch for a holiday, food is a big part of what we look forward to! Here are our favourite restaurants for catching up with friends and family.
#1 Rangoon Ruby
This is the first place I book when I head home to Christchurch. This is a very special restaurant serving Burmese cuisine - I think the only one like it in New Zealand. I have been visiting since it opened and pretty much have the same things every time. Highlights are the tea salad, the marinated fresh fish, the shredded chicken salad and the sautéed prawns, but really, everything is a winner.
#2 Saggio Di Vino
Elegant and welcoming, Saggio Di Vino is the place to go for romantic or grown up dinners. Owners Lisa and Yommi feel like part of our family because we have been going there for so long. With beautiful interior design and luxury decor, it is one of the most enjoyable places to meet for dinner. They have great quality produce and a phenomenal wine list. Highlights are the Angus beef fillet, the pan-fried Hapuka and anything that’s on the specials menu, it will be delicious and unique.
#3 Pedro’s House of Lamb
Another favourite for our family is Pedro’s House of Lamb. Prior to the Christchurch earthquake, Pedro’s Restaurant was where we went for all our family’s special occasions, the Spanish food was so delicious and we hope one day Pedro will re-open his restaurant again. House of Lamb is a brilliant food-truck concept where you book your lamb dinner in advance and have it wherever you are staying. I’ll be honest, my new dinner party routine is Pedro’s lamb with all the trimmings!
#4 King of Snake
Any of Tony Astle's restaurants are worth a visit, he’s a New Zealand legend in the Food and Beverage industry, and I love his passion for funky interiors that are tie the dining brand all together. The King of Snake is a great place to go for all ages; the style is asian fusion, the cocktails are to die for and atmosphere and service are fantastic. Head along early and have a drink in the bar to get your appetite going before eating.
#5 Leinster Road Bistro
This is my daughter’s favourite restaurant, her Father and her have a well established ritual of having brunch here each weekend when we are home in Christchurch. The Bistro has wonderful food, with a range of tastes that changes with the seasons and there is something for everyone. This is a great place to catch up with friends and family. Highlights are the duck liver pate and the beef rib eye. They also have a wonderfully crispy and fresh fish and chips - a must-try during any New Zealand holiday!
