When I travelled back to New Zealand recently, my Mother and I ventured off to get to know Otahuna Luxury Lodge a little better. Lady B and I arrived down the freshly raked gravel driveway, bordered by a field of yellow spring daffodils up to the entrance of the grand and beautiful 1895 wedding present.

This category one heritage mansion sits gracefully in a valley nestled under hills, surrounded by sweeping lawns with gorgeous spring daffodils and perfectly manicured gardens.

We came at the perfect time of year to enjoy the sea of yellow spring flowers. It’s a breath of fresh air here and was wonderful to be welcomed by our hosts, owners Miles Refo and Hall Cannon.

These fascinating Americans fell in love with Otahuna Luxury Lodge and have brought a welcome charm to the history of this grand estate, with a meticulous renovation and remodelling, their passion for it is obvious to see. Their goal "To run the finest lodge destination in New Zealand" is in all the details they have created for their clientele.

Each of the seven stylish and lavish suites are a haven of refined comfort, with freshly cut flowers, roaring fires, custom-made linen, deep bathtubs and toiletries by Pehanligon’s. They all have a charm of their own and customers can specifically request their favourite.

The Rhodes Suite, Verandah Suite and the Polo Suite were our favourites, but all of them are beautiful, with great New Zealand charm with superbly comfortable beds.

Otahuna was built with love, as a wedding gift from Sir Heaton Rhodes to his wife Jessie, and was always meant to represent the finer things in life. That is carried on today with sophisticated cuisine and a renowned wine cellar - my mouth is watering simply thinking about the food we experienced.

Even on a cloudy day when we were there the grounds are stunning and will delight couples travelling from Asia with the quiet tranquility and space. 130 different fruit, nuts and vegetables are grown every year on site and with a staggering 20 year master plan for garden restoration the commitment to the estate is phenomenal.
