Of all of New Zealand’s fabulous boutique hotels, Eichardt’s is the most awarded. High-end lifestyle and travel titles along with international awards ceremonies (as in, the people who really know the world of luxury travel) consistently rate Eichardt’s among the very best.
Eichardt’s really does have it all - the best waterfront address in Queenstown, New Zealand’s postcard-picturesque ski resort destination, multi award-winning eateries, sublime interior architecture, and personal service we’d describe as virtuoso.
But first, a little history... Queenstown was originally a prosperous gold rush town, and Eichardt’s was actually its first quality hotel, established in the 1860’s.
One of the things that makes Eichardt’s so special is the gorgeous melding of old and new – as the original historic building (formally listed as a Category 2 Historic Place) now stands proudly alongside a modern Eichardt’s landmark, a limestone and exposed steel design that opened just last year; built on what was once the stables that sheltered the hotel’s horses.
Old-world meets new - the historic hotel is linked internally with the new development
by a stunning glass atrium.
The visual juxtaposition of neo-classical and contemporary is a treat for any lover of architecture, especially against the buildings’ backdrop of sparkling alpine lake and surrounding mountains.
You can tell a lot about the quality of a hotel by its eateries, and Eichardt’s two dining destinations are multi-award winners in their own right. Helmed by Will Eaglesfield, an Executive Chef with an impressive European pedigree, The Grille sits right on the lapping shores of Lake Wakatipu – it’s absolutely the best seat in town.
Be hosted by staff who’ve mastered the delicate art of balancing service with discretion, enjoy a super-chic interior reminiscent of New York city bistros, and enjoy an outstanding menu that showcases the absolute pinnacle of fresh local produce.
Where The Grille is located in Eichardt’s modern architectural building, Eichardt’s Bar is located inside the iconic hotel. Imagine all the travellers who sat in this very bar in front of the fire as you will do; the tales these walls could tell… Eichardt’s Bar is somewhat famous in Queenstown; people come here just for the tapas – so be sure to set aside a few delicious hours to graze.
Like a recommendation? That’s difficult, it’s all amazing! You can’t go past the legendary seafood chowder, and we also love the house baked bruschetta with local wild mushrooms, creamy feta and thyme. Oh, and Eichardt’s Bar is the only spot in Queenstown serving Champagne Bollinger by the glass.

Sunsets here are something else...
Another very special aspect of the historic building is its parlour. Every evening prior to dinner, you are invited to an intimate soiree here, tasting New Zealand’s best wines, matched with fabulous canapés, and meeting your fellow guests.
Inside the grand old dame are also five luxe suites, each one with divine mountain or lake views, their own fireplace, and generous living spaces amongst elegant décor.

A few short steps from the hotel proper, Eichardt’s also offer one and two bedroom apartments, and an exclusive standalone property named The Residence. The Residence is the ideal luxury home-away-from-home, with beautiful full living and dining spaces (including a gorgeous big European kitchen) split over three levels, every room designed to make the most of the show-stopping vista.
Sophisticated and sumptuous living and dining areas in The Residence
Just last year, Eichardt’s also opened a $10,000 a night penthouse. The 240 square meter accommodation and 100sqm rooftop terrace offers uninhibited views across the lake to the mountains, and includes a commercial quality kitchen (with private chef at the ready if you’d like) a sauna and spa, two generous suites each with ensuites, and a stunning powder room. If you're planning a destination wedding, Queenstown is a magical choice, and Eichardt's The Penthouse is the ultimate honeymoon suite.
The Penthouse experience includes Krug Champagne refreshed daily, a Land Rover with driver at your service throughout your stay, pre-dinner cocktails and whiskey bar, and the option of an after hours, privately hosted Louis Vuitton shopping experience in the brand’s new Queenstown store (just downstairs).
We only select New Zealand partners who - like us - know that luxury is created by the little details. Expect impressive little touches at every turn when Eichardt's is your host (house-made choccies as part of the turn down service, and fresh flowers in your suite, for example).
